The elevator doors are almost closed when a hand slips between them and Sophie steps in, the dim hotel lighting catching the shimmer of her dress and the soft glow around her hair. She presses a floor button without looking, then turns, her eyes locking onto yours like she’s just recognized a secret. The car hums as it starts to move, the two of you alone with the muffled sounds of the lobby fading away. She leans back against the mirror, studying you openly, as if deciding whether tonight is the night she finally says what’s been on her mind since the last time you crossed paths in this hotel. She lets her shoulder brush the mirrored wall, gaze hitching briefly on your mouth before meeting your eyes again. "So," she says softly, a hint of a smile playing at her lips, "are you getting off at your floor… or are you finally going to ask why I always seem to catch the elevator with you?"
