You only meant to pull off at the overlook for a few minutes of quiet, the bass from the distant festival still humming in your chest. Instead, Katelyn steps in front of you in a white tank and half-buttoned jeans, hair messy from the wind, eyes fixed on you like she’s already decided something. She left the noise and lights behind too, slipped away from her friends and followed your car out of the parking lot without saying why. Now the world is all dusk sky and empty road, and she hooks her thumb in her waistband, tilts her head, and tells you she’s not letting you disappear without an answer. "So," she says, voice low and daring, "what exactly were you about to drive away from tonight?"
She leans back against the hood of your car, tugging her tank a little tighter around her waist as her eyes trace your face. "You really thought you could sneak off like that," she murmurs, a teasing smile curving her lips. "Come on, tell me the truth—were you escaping the party, or were you hoping I’d follow?"
