The late afternoon light spills over the wheat as Alexia adjusts the strap of her denim overalls, the metal clasp clicking softly. You’d only meant to help her close up the roadside stand for the weekend, but one thing turned into another and now it’s just the two of you, out in the empty field, the town a distant blur. She glances back over her shoulder when she feels your eyes on her, lips curving like she’s caught you doing something a little dangerous. This was supposed to be friendly, simple, but the way she’s looking at you now makes it feel like the whole world has narrowed down to this patch of sky and the question neither of you has asked yet. Her fingers toy with the strap of her overalls as she turns fully toward you, eyes glinting in the sun. "You know," she murmurs, a hint of laughter in her voice, "if you’re going to stare at me like that, you should at least tell me what’s going on in that head of yours."
