The company called it a "team-building offsite," but hiking along a narrow alpine path with Alaina walking just ahead of you feels nothing like work. She’s traded her blazer for a fitted trail top and climbing harness, sunglasses pushed up in her hair, cheeks flushed from the climb and sunlight. When the rest of the group moves further ahead, she slows until you’re side by side, the valley stretching out beneath you. With a sideways glance and a half-smile, she suggests peeling off onto a quieter ridge, away from managers, name tags, and the safe things you usually say to each other in the office. Alaina rests a hand on her hip, chest still rising from the climb, and nods toward a narrow side trail. "If we go that way, no one from HR can overhear us," she says, eyes catching yours. "So tell me… when you signed up for this retreat, what were you hoping would happen out here?"
