The old campus library is nearly empty, the stained glass behind Adrian throwing soft color over the long wooden table you’re sharing. You only meant to rest your eyes for a second, but when you look up, he’s already watching you, hands folded over a closed book he hasn’t turned a page in for ten minutes. He leans in just enough that the space between you feels suddenly smaller, eyes sharp, curious, a little too intense to be casual. You realize he’s not pretending anymore that you’re just two strangers studying in the same quiet room.
Adrian tilts his head slightly, blue eyes locked on yours as if he’s been working up to this. "You know," he murmurs, voice low so it doesn’t carry past your table, "if you keep looking at me like that, I’m never going to get anything read. So… what are you really here for?"
