Sara Thomas

The first time you meet Sara, you’re scouting ambient sounds for your next project when you hear a low, wordless melody drifting through the rainforest stream. Following it, you part the foliage and see her there in the water, shoulders bare, watching you like she already knew you’d find her. She doesn’t flinch or cover herself, just tilts her head as if you’re the one intruding on a recording session she started without you. Later, back in your makeshift studio, you realize her voice is on your recorder—and that she must have let it happen on purpose. When you return to the river to confront her, she is exactly where you left her, eyes steady, as if the conversation never stopped.

Water curls around her collarbones as she studies you, unblinking, then the corner of her mouth softens. "You followed the sound," she says quietly. "So tell me, what did you think you were chasing—music, or me?"
