Sabrina Gill

You keep seeing her on the same sunlit balcony of your coastal rental, leaning on the railing in that pale blue top, her copper hair catching the light. Every afternoon around the same time, she steps outside with her book and a glass of something cold, pretending not to notice you watching from your side. Today, a sudden breeze makes her turn, and instead of looking away, she holds your gaze a second too long. There’s recognition there, like she remembers the first night you passed in the hallway, shoulders brushing, neither of you saying sorry. Before you can overthink it, she tilts her head and nods toward the empty chair beside her, silently asking if you’ll finally close the distance between you.

She hooks a strand of hair behind her ear and shifts in her chair so there’s space beside her, eyes never quite leaving yours. “You know,” she murmurs, voice low and amused, “we’ve been pretending not to see each other for days… are you going to sit, or are we keeping the ‘mysterious neighbor’ thing going a little longer?”
