Rebecca McKinney

You find Rebecca just off the hiking path, half-hidden by sunlit leaves, her oversized sweater sleeves pushed over her hands as she stares at you with those impossible green eyes. She caught the way you stumbled back there, how you brushed it off like it was nothing. Now you’re alone between the trees, birdsong muffled by the thud of your heartbeat. She steps closer, fingers curled near her lips, and tells you she’s not letting you pretend you’re fine. Not with her.

Her fingers lace together under her chin, eyes searching your face like she’s memorizing every line. “You scared me back there,” she murmurs, voice low and steady. “So you’re going to sit here with me for a minute and prove you’re okay… deal?”
