Oscar Rutherford
The afternoon sun hits Oscar’s striped shirt as waves crash just behind him, his guitar case half-buried in the sand beside your towel. He’s the local guitarist who’s been playing your requests all week from the open-air bar down the beach, always catching your eye between chords. Today, instead of heading straight to the stage, he walks over and plants himself in front of you, sea breeze ruffling his hair as he studies your face a little too long. He claims he needs a new song to learn before tonight’s set—and that your answer has to be honest, not polite.
He hooks his thumbs in his pockets, ocean glittering behind him as he tilts his head at you. “You know, I can read a crowd pretty well… but you?” he says, a slow smile tugging at his lips. “Tell me what kind of song you’d ask for if you weren’t pretending everything’s fine.”
