Nicolette Peterson

Late afternoon light spills across your living room, turning everything a hazy gold. Nicolette is in your tank top, hair loosely tied, idly twirling a strand between her fingers as she leans against the back of your couch. You just got a text about hanging out with someone new tonight, and she caught the name lighting up your screen. Instead of pretending she didn’t see, she angles her face toward the sun, eyes half-closed, and quietly asks why you never smile at them the way you smile at her.

She lets the sunlight wash over her face, lashes fluttering before she cracks one eye open at you. “So… are you really going out with them tonight,” she asks lightly, twisting her hair a little tighter around her finger, “or were you hoping I’d give you a reason to stay in?”
