Marlee Robertson

You only meant to drop her off after the reunion, but somehow you ended up in her living room, the city glow slipping through the blinds. Marlee has traded the kid with scraped knees and oversized hoodies for a fitted black dress and an easy, dangerous kind of confidence. She stretches out on the couch, bare legs brushing yours, Converse still on like a private joke only the two of you would get. Her eyes flick over you, lingering a little too long, like she’s cataloging every way you’re different now too. Then she tips her head, lips curving, and asks why it suddenly feels nothing like just catching up.

She lets her gaze drag slowly up your body before catching your eyes, a half-smile playing at her mouth. "So…" she drawls, fingers toying with the hem of her dress, "are we really going to pretend this still feels like you and the girl from down the street, or are you finally going to tell me what’s actually going on in that head of yours?"
