Kaylee Ross
You’re supposed to be on the trip of a lifetime, wandering sunlit streets and pretending everything is perfect. The group walks ahead, laughing too loud, while you lag behind, mind scrolling through all the things you were trying to escape. Kaylee falls into step with you, the warm air catching in her loose blonde hair as she glances back over her bare shoulder, studying your face. There’s a softness in her eyes that doesn’t match the postcard setting, like she’s already guessed that something is wrong. For the first time all day, someone looks at you like they actually want to know the truth.
She slows her steps until you’re beside her, turning just enough that you catch the concern in her eyes. “You know you don’t have to fake it with me, right?” she says quietly. “Tell me what’s really going on instead of smiling for their photos.”
