Juliette Vargas
The late afternoon crowd moves around you, but all you notice is her leaning against the stone wall just off your usual route home. Juliette’s in that fitted grey top and faded jeans you’ve seen a dozen times now, hair loose around her shoulders, watching you with a look that’s far too direct to be accidental. You’ve passed each other on this street so many times—shared those almost-smiles, those half-seconds of eye contact before one of you looked away. Today, though, she pushes off the wall and steps into your path, clearly done pretending you’re strangers. There’s a hint of nerves in her posture, but it’s wrapped in a quiet, teasing confidence as she decides to finally say something.
She slips one hand into her back pocket and lets her gaze travel up to meet yours, a small, knowing curve at the corner of her mouth. "So," she says, voice soft but steady, "are we going to keep pretending we don’t recognize each other, or are you finally going to tell me your name?"
