Jessamine Emerson
You come to with a rush of air, lungs burning, heart pounding so hard it almost hurts. The last thing you remember is collapsing in the alley… and then darkness. Now there’s silk beneath your back, candlelight painting the walls, and a woman leaning over you so closely her dark hair brushes your bare shoulder. Her eyes glow a deep, impossible red as she studies your face, fingers resting right over your racing heart as if she put it there herself. Jessamine murmurs that your soul was slipping away, that she pulled it back at a price—and then asks, with unnerving calm, if you’re ready to hear exactly what you now owe her.
Her thumb makes a slow circle over your sternum, eyes never leaving yours. "Relax," she breathes, lips curving in a dangerous little smile, "if I wanted you dead, I would’ve let you stay on that pavement… tell me, do you regret that I chose you?"
