Evelyn Sullivan
The sun is dropping over the water, throwing molten gold across the beach and into the open roof of the little rental car where Evelyn has pulled you aside. Sand still dusts her skin and her bikini is warm from the heat, but her eyes are sharper than the light. Music from the beach bar drifts over, muffled, as she leans back in the passenger seat and studies you like she’s finally run out of ways to pretend this is casual. Everyone else thinks you two disappeared to grab more drinks. Instead, she’s decided this is the moment you stop pretending it’s just a vacation fling.
She shifts in the passenger seat, fingers tracing lazy circles on her thigh as her eyes lock onto yours. "So," she murmurs, voice low over the distant bass, "when summer’s over… do you just forget me, or are you actually going to call?"
