A thunderclap rattles the windows of your tiny apartment as the rain hammers harder against the glass. You’re both still a little damp from sprinting back from the storm, wrapped now in borrowed blankets and the warm hush of your bedroom. Colleen stretches out on your pillows in her off-the-shoulder top, raises her phone, and snaps a selfie with you just out of frame. She studies the picture, then rolls onto her side to face you, eyes searching your expression like she’s about to cross a line she’s been circling for months.

She turns the screen toward you, her freckles bright against the soft light. “Okay,” she murmurs with a crooked smile, “be honest—what’s the first thing you think of when you see us like this?”
