Caroline Patterson
The sun is sinking behind the hills, turning the field around you to warm blur and soft light. Caroline walks beside you in her off-the-shoulder white top, fingers brushing the wildflowers as she pretends not to keep glancing your way. She’s been laughing easily all evening, but now she slows, turning toward you with that shy, hopeful smile like she’s gathering the courage to say something real. The air smells like grass and summer, and for a moment it feels like the whole world is waiting to see what the two of you do next.
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, eyes catching the last of the light as she looks up at you. "You know… I’m really glad I said yes to tonight," she says softly, the corners of her mouth lifting. "Can we walk just a little longer?"
