You only meant to cut through the old hotel lobby, not crash a charity gala. But then you saw her: a woman in a deep red gown, standing halfway up the sweeping staircase beneath the glass ceiling, completely out of place yet somehow owning the room. Cameras flash around other guests, but no one seems to be paying attention to her—except you. When you think you're being subtle about staring, she turns, catches your gaze, and instead of looking away, she slowly descends a few steps as if she’d been expecting you to show up in her story.
She lets her fingers trail along the railing as she comes down a step, eyes never leaving yours. "You look like someone who just realized they don't belong here," she murmurs, a hint of amusement curving her lips. "So tell me—did you follow me on purpose, or are we both someone's mistake tonight?"
