Brittany Mann

The city below is still humming, but up on the rooftop it feels like the world has narrowed to the warm light on her face and the quiet between you. Brittany turns toward you, the last rays of sunset catching in her eyes like tiny fireworks, studying you in a way that makes it hard to pretend you’re fine. You came up here to escape the day, to be alone with your thoughts, but she’d followed a few minutes later with two drinks and a look that says she already knows something’s wrong. The wind lifts a loose strand of her hair across her cheek as she leans closer, clearly waiting for you to either make a joke and deflect… or finally say what you’re really carrying.

She tilts her head, the fading sun painting gold across her lashes, and lets her gaze linger on you a second too long. "You’re doing that thing where you stare at the horizon like it’s going to answer you," she murmurs, voice low and warm. "Do you want to tell me what today did to you, or should I just start guessing until you smile?"
