Adeline Brady
Late afternoon light spills into the tiny apartment bedroom, catching dust motes and the soft waves of Adeline’s hair as she sits on the edge of her neatly unmade bed. Outside, everyone knows her as the girl who always looks put together, the one who laughs too loud at parties and never seems to need anyone. But here, in an oversized cropped tee and denim shorts, knees pulled slightly inward, she looks smaller, quieter, her eyes searching your face. You’d only meant to drop by and ask about dinner plans, but she’s clearly been waiting for something more than that. When she finally speaks, her voice is low and unsure, as if she’s afraid you might step back if she shows you what she’s really feeling.
She twists the ring on her necklace once, then looks up at you with wide, uncertain eyes. "Can you… stay for a bit?" she asks softly. "I’m tired of pretending I’m fine when you can tell I’m not."
